Job Description:
Position Summary
As a leader within the finance organization, reporting directly to the US Divisional Controller, this position will require proven technical and leadership skills in a fast-paced, collaborative environment by overseeing and managing the financial and reporting activities of the US General Ledger (GL) Accounting Team.
The Accounting Manager acts as a thought leader on a range of technical accounting and finance-related issues while exhibiting the Company’s core values and principles. He/she establishes financial status by developing and implementing systems for collecting, analyzing, verifying, and reporting financial information.
The Accounting Manager has direct oversight of the US GL Accounting Team, which consists of a Senior Accountant and two sub-teams, each sub-team with a GL Supervisor and four staff. As such, the Accounting Manager is required to provide real-time performance coaching, development, and facilitate and organize staff trainings.
The Accounting Manager will drive GL-related projects, and when required, partner with other finance team leaders and the US Divisional Controller to improve functional excellence across the broader finance organization. The Accounting Manager has a direct impact on the integrity of the US Division’s books, records, and financial controls.
Position Responsibilities
The Accounting Manager oversees the US Division’s books, records, and financial controls, and provides accounting leadership and direction for the US GL Accounting Team by:
- Ensuring the integrity of transactions contained within the financial statements; performing timely and robust risk-based analytical and quantitative reviews of financial performance and monthly internal financial reports; ensuring the accuracy of monthly and quarterly internal reporting of financial performance to senior management;
- Being a policy authority by supporting and exemplifying existing policies and procedures, and participating on functional teams to perform regular implementation and reviews of policies and procedures;
- Monitoring Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) compliance for processes that affect the US GL Accounting Team, focusing specifically on processes owned by the US GL Accounting Team; the Accounting Manager is a leader for SOX compliance within the US Division and ensures financial controls are regularly updated and rationalized to ensure relevant financial statement risks are appropriately mitigated;
- Exercising professional skepticism in performing robust critical reviews of significant, unusual or non-recurring transactions. Ensures estimates and assumptions are reasonable, supportable and explainable to internal and external stakeholders;
- Developing effective working relationships with finance employees in offsite locations, such as regional hubs and plant locations, as well as with group corporate accounting;
- Demonstrating cross-functional awareness and executes best practices within the US GL Accounting Team that reflects ‘big pictures’ wins that extend beyond the boundaries of the US GL Accounting Team;
- Working closely with IT to ensure that ERP system provides accurate, timely, and useful data;
- Demonstrating a keen ability to de-construct complex issues into straight-forward concepts; and
- Demonstrating professionalism when challenging the status quo and questioning ideas and decisions to ensure the accuracy of financial information.
Reviews high risk journal entries, income and balance sheet statements, account reconciliations, and various other accounting reports as appropriate to support an accurate and timely monthly financial close for the Company’s US Division by:
- Overseeing the timely completion of tasks associated with the general ledger, including reviewing high risk journal entries and financial transactions;
- Maintaining financial integrity of general ledger transactions;
- Ensuring that the general ledger is closed within the timelines of the Company’s closing schedule;
- Reviewing account analysis and reconciliations;
- Ensuring that all financial transactions are recorded in accordance with United States Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP) and appropriate financial variance analyses are provided timely to management;
- Developing strong working relationships with coworkers and other departments;
- Collaborating with senior management and external auditors to ensure that issues arising from significant, complex accounting matters are communicated and resolved timely; and
- Ensures the audit cycle is executed seamlessly within the US Division and mitigates audit overruns arising from internal inefficiencies.
Provides, suggests, supports and implements alternatives to work processes that will increase efficiencies and quality of financial results by:
- Developing strong understanding of accounting and business processes that the team has oversight responsibilities for;
- Identifying process inefficiencies and root causes, and being a catalyst for change;
- Demonstrating a keen ability to digest significant and complex accounting matters and can logically explain and discuss them with senior executives using “non-accountant” jargon; and
- Partnering with other finance and non-finance groups to support design and implement process improvements.
Manages others by providing ongoing development, mentoring, and strong learning experiences by:
- Recruiting, motivating and training high performing staff;
- Emphasizing coaching culture by example through mentoring, motivating, and developing staff; serves as a resource to them in order to facilitate their professional development;
- Leading the development of team goals and holds team accountable by celebrating "wins" and scrutinizing "losses" for continuous improvement;
- Promoting a high level of ethical awareness and conduct;
- Keeping current on trends and developments in the accounting field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related conferences, seminars, etc.;
- Championing learning and education by encouraging department team members to pursue and maintain professional accreditation and licensure, as appropriate; and
- Maintaining peer relationships to share issues and ideas.

Quantitative Dimensions
Decision Making:
The Accounting Manager possesses advanced decision making skills to be effective in his/her role. Decision-making includes accounting policy, process flows, resource allocation, and issue resolution.
The Accounting Manager must have good problem solving and reasoning skills in order to execute day-to-day departmental functions with limited involvement from the US Divisional Controller.

Management

Responsibilities:
The Accounting Manager is directly responsible for the day-to-day work of the US GL Accounting Team, which consists of a Senior Accountant and two sub-teams, each sub-team with a GL Supervisor and four staff. This position has responsibility for HR functions for their direct reports, such as goal setting and managing day-to-day accountabilities. The Accounting Manager will partner with the US Divisional Controller for significant HR functions, such as reviewing the teams’ year-end appraisals and making hiring decisions.

Scope of Position:
The Accounting Manager leads and directs the Accounting team based in Mission Viejo, CA, and has excellent leadership skills to successfully develop and mentor his/her group. Additionally, the Accounting Manager has the ability to develop effective working relationships with finance employees in offsite locations, such as regional hubs and plant locations, as well as with group corporate accounting.

Position Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Exceptional knowledge of US GAAP and SOX.
- Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing accounting process and procedures.
- Demonstrated operational accounting background (cost accounting).
- Strong understanding of operations.
- Ability to operate in a large ERP system.
- Excellent analytical and decision making skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent assignments while meeting deadlines and demanding quality execution.
- Proven track record directing external resources to manage and execute effectively.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
- Superior interpersonal and written/oral communication skills with the ability to relate well and cooperate with others to effectively coordinate activities and accomplish goals.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and ability in guiding direct reports to effectively accomplish performance goals.
- Ability to travel (15%).

Education/Experience:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting is required.
- CPA license is required.
- 9+ years of progressive accounting/finance work experience, including:
o 4+ years of “Big 4” public accounting experience is required.
o 3+ years of private industry work experience is required, including some portion of time leading a key accounting and/or reporting function
- Manufacturing industry experience preferred
- Experience with large-scale ERP required, experience with SAP preferred
